Clean Mountains, Save Mountains: Our Volunteer Initiative
Mountains are the soul of our planet, they give us water, life, culture, inspiration, and balance. Clean Mountains, Save Mountains is the heart of The 108 Peaks: a non-profit volunteer initiative that was born even before the project itself took shape.
This mission began when we saw how little awareness there was around waste management in many Himalayan villages. Not because people don’t care, but because there are almost no systems, infrastructures, or education programs on how to handle waste. As a result, rubbish often ends up along school paths, by the roadside, near homes, or scattered in the forest.
We knew something had to change, and that change had to start with awareness.
Our Purpose
We visit schools across the Himalayas to inspire a conscious lifestyle in the mountains. Our goal is simple but powerful:
If we protect the Himalayas, the whole world benefits.
Clean water, healthy ecosystems, resilient communities, and sustainable tourism all begin here.

What We Do in Schools
Every time we receive donations, we don’t simply buy school supplies without context. We bring meaning. Each visit becomes a full learning experience that empowers children and teachers to protect their mountains.
1. Yoga for Awareness
We begin each visit with a gentle Yoga session led by Gemma.
This moment of calm helps students connect with their breath, their bodies, and the environment, setting the tone for mindful learning.
2. Talk on Mountain Consciousness
We share an engaging talk about: Why the Himalayas are vital for India and the entire planet. How waste affects rivers, forests, soil, and villages. Simple daily habits that create a long-lasting impact. The power of community-led change. We explain these ideas in a way that children and teachers can genuinely apply in daily life.
3. Hands-On Eco Activities
Each school participates in a practical, meaningful, zero-cost activity, such as: Recycling crafts using materials that would otherwise be thrown away. Tree planting in and around school grounds. Community cleanup around the school and village. This is the moment when awareness turns into real action.
4. Collective Reflection
At the end of every workshop, we gather all the students for a group reflection. We encourage them to share ideas, propose solutions, and think about how they can transform their village. This is often the most inspiring part: children become leaders of change.
5. Healthy Food & Gathering
We finish by sharing snacks and drinks with all students, a simple moment that builds community and joy.

How Donations Are Used
Every rupee is used with intention and transparency.
We invest in:
– Workshop materials (paints, brushes, recycled craft supplies)
– Waste management kits (trash bags, gloves, masks)
– Small meaningful gifts like the “Clean Mountains, Save Mountains” T-shirt for students, a reminder of the message and a way for them to spread awareness
– Snacks for all children after the session
– Transport costs to reach remote villages
Your support helps us educate, empower, and inspire. Nothing is spent without purpose.
Why This Project Matters
The Himalayan region urgently needs awareness about waste and environmental protection.
Without education, infrastructure, or guidance, pollution spreads unknowingly, threatening rivers, forests, wildlife, and entire communities.
By working directly with children, we are planting the seeds for a future where the mountains are respected, valued, and protected.

How We Engage Communities to Keep Mountains Clean and Green

01. Creating Awareness
Conduct workshops in schools and local communities to educate children and residents about environmental conservation, and sustainable practices.

02. Plastic Reduction
Organize tree planting campaigns and plastic reduction initiatives, teaching communities to reduce waste and care for nature.

03. Funding & Support
Supported through contributions from our treks and journeys, we enable travelers to actively participate in protecting the mountains.
